Description

Photograph of Westwick Hall, Cambridgeshire, with men from D Troop, the Duke of Manchester’s Light Horse plus other civilians standing in front, 1867. Most of the soldiers are in undress uniform, with red tunics, white breeches and black riding boots. They have pillbox forage caps and most of them have their swords attached to their sword belts. The occasion appears to be the culmination of a sword exercise competition, which was won by Sgt Smith Howlett Rowley (no. 10) who is standing in the doorway holding the two-handled cup. The cup was presented by Cornet John Linton (no. 17). Smith Howlett Rowley’s older brother, Pte William Taylor Rowley is also in the image (no.5). Photographed by Mayland, Cambridge. At some point someone has annotated the image with the names of the soldiers and put numbers next to where they are standing: 1) T Gurnell 2) Mrs T Gurnell 3) William Corkerton 4) John Bonnett 5) William Taylor Rowley 6) William Saunders 7) Tom Webb 8) Sgt Maj Gooding 9) Admiral Davis 10) Smith Howlett Rowley, winner of the cup 11) Hobbs (butler?) 12) Sanders Holben 13) John Doggett 14) Alfred Mason 15) Cpl Maj Sheppard, 2nd Life Guards 16) Capt Alfred Towgood 17) Cornet John Linton 18) Harry Cole 19) S. Parkhouse 20) Samual Peed. From a collection of 15 photographs and one archive relating to Captain Sidney Smith Rowley, Devonshire Regiment and Labour Corps, and his father Sergeant Smith Howlett Rowley, Duke of Manchester’s Light Horse, 1862 (c) - 1918 (c).
