Letter to unknown recipient from Col Francis Lloyd, South Africa, 22 Sep 1900. Describes journey by train across Transvaal. Addressed from ‘[illegible] Junction, near Winburg, South Africa’. In envelope with franking ‘Oswestry Oc. 13, 00’. From a group of 47 letters, papers and envelopes to and from members of the Lloyd family, including Sir Francis Lloyd and his wife Lady Mary Lloyd (néeGunnis), 1859-1967. Associated with Boer War (1899-1902). The letter was written after Lloyd was wounded and possibly describes the journey on the return to his battalion, which was 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards. He had inherited Aston Hall in Oswestry from his father in 1898, so the franking may mean the letter is to Francis’ wife Mary.
