NAM.1956-07-75-169
Printed despatch slip from the Chief Commissioner's and Territorial Commissioner's Offices Lahore, 8 Aug 1857. From correspondence and other papers of Colonel David Wilkie, 4th Bengal Native Infantry, mostly relating to the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). Mutineers at Delhi and Cawnpore. Steam ship Himalaya at Calcutta, bringing 1500 troops. Nana Selab Bihare, drowned at Lucknow. Bahader Khan apprehended at Soneput by C B Saunders. Maharajah Goolab Singh dead of fever. About 30 of the late 26th Light Infantry mutiniers, apprehended in the Umritsur district, were yesterday forwarded to the Meean Meer Cantonment, where they will at once be brought to trial. They were in a miserable plight, and one could hardly have recognized in their jaded and emaciated countenances, the clean, well-fed, smart-looking sepoys of the previous week.
