Description

Letter from Ensign Gordon Hugh Davidson, Bengal European Light Infantry, to his mother, Camp Albarwalla, 29 Jan 1846. He repeats reports he has heard of Harry Smith’s victory at Aliwal. There is a good prospect of his being promoted lieutenant. His horse has been stolen and he has been ill, ‘I think it was from the water I drank at Ferozeshah as almost everybody in camp was more or less ill after it. Only fancy we found out afterwards that the Sikhs had crammed all the wells in their camp half full of their own dead.’ From a collection of letters and papers of and relating to Lt Gordon Hugh Davidson, 1st Bengal European Light Infantry, 1841-1852. Lt Davidson was killed at the Battle of Sobraon, during the 1st Sikh War, 10 Feb 1846. Plus transcripts. Associated with the Battle of Aliwal, 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) 1846.
