Description

Photograph of five soldiers from the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards, posing for the image in front of the Orderly Room, 1897. The Orderly Room in this context is a large tent, with smaller bell tents and some barrack buildings in the background, probably at Pirbright. Two Corporals stand wearing white drill jackets, plus another soldier (probably a senior non-commissioned officer) wears the scarlet tunic, sash and peaked cap. The other two soldiers stand facing each other. They are wearing blue patrol jackets with field service caps. The man on the left with the sword hanging from his sword belt may be Sgt Maj J Fowles. There are two wooden boards propped up on chairs outside the tent to inform everyone it is the Orderly Room, and a neat path delineated with white stones and two flags mark its entrance. Image produced by W. Gregory & Co., London, and F. G. O. Stuart. An orderly room is the administrative office for a small military unit, like a battalion, where administrative tasks are performed and unit records are kept. It's the centre for office work, managing personnel records, and handling routine administrative business for the unit's soldiers and officers.  Album of 60 photographs and archives entitled: ‘Personal Album - G F M Montgomerie. 1st Battalion 1897’, showing parades, portraits, and group images, taken in the UK, India and Gibraltar.
