Description
Transcript letter, 5 Jul 1842. Written by Lt Col Thomas Stephens, 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) to his wife Eleanor in Calcutta. Describes his assignment commanding a regiment aboard the Minerva. Also describes his financial situation and plans after the war ends. Associated with 1st China War (1839-1842). Stephens survived the battle of Shing Kun Foo, but died a few days later, possibly from cholera.
