Typescript extract from L C Bernacchi’s ‘A Very Gallant Gentleman’, describing how Whyte saved the life of the wounded Lt L E G Oates, who later died as a member of Scott’s Antarctic Expedition. It relates how Oates, serving with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, was wounded on patrol near Aberdeen. Whyte and a volunteer search party located Oates, his fractured leg was set without the aid of an anaesthetic, and he was evacuated to Aberdeen.
