NAM.1989-01-125-2
Houghton and Gunn's Diary for 1901 used by Lt Henry Morris Pryce-Jones, Coldstream Guards. Associated with the Boer War (1899-1902). The year opens with 1 & 2 Coys 2nd Coldstream Guards, 82 Coy Imperial Yeomanry, some of 5th Lancers, 2 guns of 44th RA and 60 of Nesbitt's Horse formed into Shute's Column and camped at Magazine Hill near Graaff Reinet. From Jan-May they were on outpost duty seeing little action against the Boers, moving to Groote Dam May 11 with small actions and long marches before they returned to Graaff Reinet where they were engaged on more dreary outpost duty until the end of the year. When he was not out duty he played tennis, cricket, polo, billiards and bridge as well as reading 125 books (which he listed). He spent 3 days in hospital suffering from mild concussion caused by a fall during a polo match.
