Description

Military Cross, 1917, with bar 1918. Awarded to Capt Louis Campbell Byrne, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. From a medal group of five mounted together upon a bar with brooch fitting. Byrne twice awarded the Military Cross, first in 1917, and again in 1918 (the bar inscribed ‘1918’ to reflect this.) The London Gazette of 18 July 1918 cites Byrne’s bravery: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He entered the enemy's lines, and when the enemy refused to come out of a tunnel 'he bombed some of the shafts’. An enemy officer came out of the tunnel, and he at once captured him and his men. He 'made the officer show him where the tunnel was mined, and then cut the leads to the explosives’. He displayed great initiative and resource. “
