NAM.2002-02-1491-2
British War Medal 1914-20. From medal group awarded to 6280382 Sergeant John Matthew Richards, 1st Bn, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and 18th Hussars. This medal is suspended from an orange ribbon with white and black stripes and a royal blue border. The obverse depicts the head of King George V facing left with no crown. The words 'GEORGIVS V BRITT OMN: REX ET IND: IMP' meaning George V, King of all British Isles and Emperor of India are written along the perimeter. Though slightly worn away, just below the head of the King are the initials BM, the hallmark of Bertram Mackennal. The reverse shows St George on horseback with a skull and cross bones being stamped on by the horse. There is a sun towards the top of the medal, in between the dates 1914 and 1918. Waves lie in the background of the horse, near the bottom. Themes of victory combined with motifs of death. On the right hand side of the medal just above the waves are the initials WMM the hallmark of William McMillan, again this is faint as it has been worn away slightly. The service number, rank, name and regiment of Sergeant Richards is inscribed on the rim. Associated with World War One (1914-1918). From the collection of the former Buffs Regimental Museum.
