Description

An Indian Army Officer, 1859 (c). Over-painted photograph on card by Herbert Walter Busbridge, 1859 (c). Bust-length portrait, three-quarters to left, wearing uniform. Glazed and framed, in metal mount with a suspension loop. In this portrait in uniform the sitter is shown wearing the Punjab and Indian Mutiny medals, each with two clasps. However, the ribbon for the Punjab medal should have been coloured in blue and yellow rather than blue and white. This miniature is associated with Lieutenant-Colonel Walter Rutherfurd (1801-1856), 11th Bengal Native Infantry. However, it cannot be a portrait of him, since Rutherfurd had died before the Indian Mutiny began in 1857.
