Scabbard has the initial ‘C’ punched on the inside near the mouthpiece, and the initials ‘W.C.’, which are closely followed by a series of dots which may represent the letters ‘LODE’; belonging to Pattern 1796, Light Cavalry sword.
A note in the accession register states that this sword was used by Capt C Clode, or W Clore, to kill Tipu Sultan at Seringapatam, 4th Mysore War, however, there is no record of an officer of this name serving at the time and no mention of this attribution was made when the sword was purchased.
