Collection of manuscript and printed papers, relating to the passage through the Commons of the Army Discipline and Regulation Act 1879. Collected by Col The Hon Arthur Frederick Stanley, Secretary of State for War (later the 16th Earl of Derby), 1878-1879. Associated with the British Army, the Royal Marines and the Dutch Army. Apart from a few items relating to the 1869-1870 Courts Martial Commission the collection consists of memoranda, lists of amendments and notes relating to various aspects of the bill dating from December 1878 to 24 Jul 1879 when it was passed. The topics covered include billeting and the impressment of carriages, courts of inquiry and corporal punishment and the role of provosts marshal. Includes information on corporal punishment in foreign armies, in particular that of Holland.
