Description

Letter from the War Office to T A Jervoise and P Bathurst, 19 May 1779. Gives War Office’s decision in the case of 18 dragoons committed for “outrageous behaviour” whilst stationed at or near Salisbury “that an example should be made of some of them at the place where the crime was committed in order to satisfy the minds of the people who are very justly exasperated at so gross an insult on the Civil Power”. The incident is referred to on page 211 of Volume XLIX (1779) of the Gentlemen’s Magazine, naming the regiment as the 6th Dragoons.
