Letter, 31 Oct and 1 Nov 1915. From 2/Lt Howard Hicklenton in Gallipoli to his parents in London. He provides details of the bombing course that he is taking, ‘learning all about trench mortars and catapults’, mentions the sinking of a British transport boat and describes the shelling of Turkish trenches. Although he maintains that the troops know nothing of what is happening in Gallipoli, he also says that he should be able to answer all of his parents’ questions as he censors his own letters. With accompanying envelope, postage free with manuscript inscription ‘On Active Service’, ‘FIELD POST OFFICE N.L.I + 2 NO15’ circular date stamp, passed by censor no 2566 with red crown square stamp, signed H Hicklenton. From a collection of 54 letters and postcards with accompanying envelopes, 1915-1916. Associated with World War One, Gallipoli, Malta and Egypt.
