‘Hougoumont - burial ground after the battle’. Aquatint by James Rouse, published by H Colburn, London, 1816 One of a series of illustrations to ‘An Historical Account of the Battle of Waterloo’, 1817. The Chateau de Hougoumont was a strong-point in the British defensive line during the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. Hougoumont was not taken in nearly nine hours of continuous fighting. This print shows the construction of a funeral pit and pyre for the dead from the battle in a mass grave. Associated with the Napoleonic Wars, Waterloo (1815).
