Photograph: Company Sergeant Christy and Sergeant McGifford, Royal Artillery. Photograph by R Howlett from photograph album of 26 photographs entitled 'Crimean Heroes 1856'. Associated with the Crimean War (1854-1856). Company Sergeant Christy (right) and Sergeant Samuel McGifford, both of the 4th Battalion, Royal Artillery, were also photographed at Queen Victoria’s request. According to 'The Illustrated London News', ‘The pictures, which they have converted into banners, were taken by these worthies from one of the churches of Sebastopol, where they decorated the wall. One picture is of St. Michael, the other of St. George and the Dragon. They are painted in a thoroughly Byzantine style, and in parts are illuminated with gold.’
