Description

Postcard photograph of a group of soldiers outside a hotel, possibly The Hotel Pension Belm’, on snow covered mountain slopes, Berne, Switzerland. Pte W Stone is seated third from the right. Some of the soldiers are wearing two upward pointing chevrons on the left arm below the elbow, denoting six years of good conduct, others wear three chevrons to denote 12 years of good conduct; some wear wound stripes on the left arm, possibly indicating that they had been sent to a camp in Switzerland to convalesce. One of the soldiers pictured is wearing a uniform of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. One of 29 items relating to Pte William James Henry Stone, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), 1914-1919. Pte Stone was interned in Switzerland from 1916 (c). From the collection of the former Buffs Regimental Museum.
