Description

One of seven typescript letters to Lt Gen Sir Gerald Ellison from Gen Sir John Steven Cowans, Gen Sir Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton and Lt Gen Sir Edward Altham, concerning his employment, 30 Oct 1915-25 Jan 1916. Ellison was to have commanded a large base at Alexandria which was to be used as the jumping off point for operations in the Levant or the East. Ellison thought that he was being degommed by being sent there although Hamilton denied this. In December, it was decided that Altham should take over as General Officer in Command, Levant Base and Ellison returned to England where his request to command a Division was unsuccessful although Cowans hoped that they might be able to find a Deputy Quarter Master General post for him with either the 4th Army in France or Maxwell. Associated with World War One, Egypt and Palestine (1914-1918). From a collection of 1020 papers relating to Lt Gen Sir Gerald Ellison, 1882-1961.
