Description

Letter, 2 to 10 December 1915. Written in the form of a diary of 3 days in the support trenches and 4 days in the firing line, from 2/Lt Howard Hicklenton in Gallipoli to his parents in London. He gives an account of the daily routine in the trenches and relates that 3 members of the battalion were killed that week, he experienced a near miss from a shell, and that ‘our old man, the Colonel, is going home’, possibly referring to Lt Gen Moncrieff. Accompanied by a press cutting of an advertisement for a pencil with torch attached that he would like his parents to send him, and the letter’s envelope, postage free with manuscript inscription ‘On Active Service’, ‘FIELD POST OFFICE N.L.I + 12 DE15’ circular date stamp, passed by censor no 2566 with red crown square stamp, signed [2nd Lt] Bryan Yeoman. From a collection of 54 letters and postcards with accompanying envelopes, 1915-1916. Associated with World War One, Gallipoli, Malta and Egypt.
