Photograph of Major Anandrao Kadam, 3rd Battalion, 5th Mahratta Light Infantry, 1944 (c)

During World War Two the regiment was greatly expanded when thirteen new war service battalions were raised in addition to its five permanent battalions. Most of these were later demobilised after the war. The 3rd Battalion served in Abyssinia (1940-41), North Africa (1941-43) and Italy (1943-45). In 1947 the five permanent battalions of the regiment were allotted to India.
