Description

Letter, 15 Apr 1898, Mombasa, to Arthur Coles, quoting a telegram from Sir Arthur Hardinge in which he relates that Lord Salisbury does not wish Arthur Coles to be ‘placed in charge of our troops’ as he is ‘merely temporarily detained in the East Africa Protectorate, where he has no military status, he should not interfere with Major [temp Lt Col] Hatch’. Hardinge was HM Commissioner and Consul-General in British East Africa Protectorate (1896-1900). From papers associated with Col Arthur Horsman Coles, 1885-1905. From the collection of the former Buffs Regimental Museum.
