Photograph of six officers talking as they walk along a road past low buildings beside which a large flag is flying. They are wearing their dark blue frock coats, peaked caps, and carry their swords on their sword belts. Behind them walk a large group of soldiers, probably from the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, on the occasion of the opening of a Soldiers’ Home in Pirbright in the summer of 1894. They are wearing a mixture of their scarlet tunics or white drill jackets. At least one man is on horseback. The six officers in the foreground are named as (from left to right): Col Barrington B D Campbell (Commanding 1st Battalion Scots Guards); Col Henry Fludyer (Commanding 2nd Battalion Scots Guards); Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught (served as Colonel of the Scots Guards from 1883 to 1904); Capt Henry G D Shute (Coldstream Guards, Brigade Major Home District); Gen Lord Paul Methuen (Major-General commanding the Brigade of Guards and General Officer Commanding the Home District) and Capt Laurence Drummond (Scots Guards, Aide-de-Camp to Lord Methuen, Home District). From an album of 75 photographs and archives entitled: ‘Personal Album, G F M Montgomerie. The Regiment 1893-1894’ (but relates to the period 1893-1896); 1st Battalion group images, in camps and on manoeuvres, in places such as the West Indies, Windsor, Pirbright and Chatham.
