Description

One of thirteen letters to Reginald de Hercie Hearsey from his brother Clarence Canning Hearsey, 22 Sep 1875-16 May 1880. The correspondence begins with a lot of brotherly advice, and explanations of why he went to sea in a merchant ship- something he does not advise having joined the Indian Navy. He thinks that Reginald might find that better then tea-planting, sheep farming or the forestry that he has heard he was going into. Clarence’s letters also contain references to his boredom, to an unpleasant Chief Officer, difficulties in getting before a board, passing his exams, and the marriage of his niece Kate who immediately makes them ‘grand uncles’. Several of the letters are illustrated with amusing sketches, eight of which have representations of the passengers on his ship the ‘Dalhousie’. Some envelopes are included.
