Major-General Rudolf von Slatin (1857–1932), known as ‘Slatin Pasha’) was an Austrian officer who was appointed Governor of Darfur province in 1881. By the end of 1883, he was forced to surrender and was held prisoner by the Mahdi for over 11 years. In 1895, he escaped and was granted the honorary title of pasha by the Khedive of Egypt.
