‘Georgey a Cock-horse’, Colonel George Hanger, ADC to Sir Henry Clinton riding in Grosvenor Street, 1796. Coloured etching by and after James Gillray, published by J Humphrey, No 18 Old Bond Street, 23 Nov 1796 Military Caricatures, one of eight cartoons. Colonel George Hanger in civilian dress riding by ‘The Mount’, a coffee shop in Grosvenor Street, in London. Hanger was more noted for his womanising and his association with the Prince Regent than his military achievements. However during the American War of Independence (1775-1783) Hanger acted as aide-de-camp to Colonel Sir Henry Clinton, serving with Hessian forces and with General Banastre Tarleton’s notorious loyalist British Legion.
