Description

Third of three sound cassettes: oral history interview with Capt F E Mileham, recalling his service in the Northern Bengal Mounted Rifles 1938-1940, 4/9 Jat Regiment, at GHQ Delhi 1942-1943, and with the Royal Indian Navy 1943-1945. He also briefly surveyed his re-integration into civilian life after his release from the services. A pre war member of the NBMR, he was called up on the outbreak of hostilities and sent to an OCTU at Belgaum from where he was posted to the 9 Jats Training Battalion. He joined the newly raised 4th Bn and was stationed at Jhelum as part of 45 Bde of 17 Indian Division. The Brigade was well trained and in due course was sent to Malaya, equiped for warfare in the Caucasuses. His account of the battalion's service in Malaya is based upon his typescript account. Having returned to India he rejoined the Training Bn before going on leave to Kashmir. Returning to Delhi he was posted to GSIZ, which provided back up for agents operating behind Japanese lines in Burma, going on a few missions himself. By August 1943 these trips declined in importance and he volunteered to serve in Combined Operations and was posted as a Sub Lieutenant attached to the Landing Craft Wing of the Royal Indian Navy. After eight months service he returned home on three months sick leave suffering from severe malaria and dysentry, arriving in Oct 1944. Refusing to return to India, he served at Felixstowe on HMS Beehive until he relinquished his commission. Interview conducted on 25 February 1991. (Transcript Available)
