Description

Volunteer Hill, Auxiliary Territorial Service, using a theodolite and C/Vol Card and Stewart, Auxiliary Territorial Service, using a window position finder, Experimental Establishment, Shoeburyness, 12 January 941 Official photograph, 1941 The glass of the Window Position Finder was engraved with a grid like graph paper. Looking through viewers, the women marked on the grid the position of the shell burst in the sky, or if the gun was fired over the sea, the point where the shell hit the water. The position was then transferred onto paper in the Observation Post room and when compared with the readings taken at four other posts, gave an accurate reading of the actual position of the shell burst. Photograph from an album containing 58 photographs relating to the Auxiliary Territorial Service Experimental Gunnery Assistants, Experimental Establishment, Shoeburyness, 1940-1941.
