Description

'Segi/ Here we arrived at sunset after a long and trying hunt after our baggage ...' 1888. Watercolour over pencil from an album of sketches by Lt A W C McFall, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. This sketch illustrates some of the difficulties of travelling in India. Beneath the picture Lt McFall has written, '...the Segi plain is a big one with numerous small villages dotted about it and the villagers we met pointed to all points of the compass when asked where the village of Segi proper was, this of course gave us several fruitless gallops - at last however, we discovered the footprints of our baggage mule and so followed on and found our belongings and the servants cooking our dinner - some of the local gentry - depicted above -called on us and brought eggs, poultry and bhusa [cattle field] and entertained us with much buck [chatter]'.
