Description
Letter from Lord Clifford in Rome to his son, Lord Charles Clifford dated 23 May 1852. In it he quotes verbatim Henry Clifford’s letter to him of 21 March 1852 in which the loss of the Birkenhead and the supersession of Harry Smith and General Somerset are referred to. Associated with the Wreck of the Birkenhead and 8th Cape Frontier War, 1852. From a collection of letters to England from Captain Henry Clifford of the Rifle Brigade while serving in Cape Colony, 1848-1853.
