Photograph of the Coldstream Guards Boer War memorial, in the vestibule of the south nave of St Paul's Cathedral, London. Image taken 1904 (c). Designed by the celebrated sculptor, William Goscombe John, the engraved tablet imparts a message of tradition, heroism and sacrifice. The foreground consists of two soldiers on the South African veldt; one wounded, the other providing support. In the middle distance are the famous kopjes of South Africa, while the sky contains the ethereal presence of former Coldstream Guardsmen including General Monck, who raised the original force, and figures from the Peninsula War, Waterloo and the Crimean campaign. They look down approvingly on their modern counterparts, signalling that the honourable traditions of the regiment have been maintained. From an album of 68 photographs compiled by or presented to Col Maxwell Earle DSO. The album is entitled: ‘Personal Album, M. Earle. South Africa - 1900-1904’, but covers the period 1899-1909. The images and group portraits are mainly taken in England, such as in London, or Aldershot, plus a few taken in South Africa during the Boer War.
