Description

Pamphlet: Why we should state Terms of Settlement. Released by the Union of Democratic Control, nd. Lays out the case for suing for peace with the Central Powers rather than continue the bloodshed. One of the reasons put forth is eerily prophetic: ‘It might prevent a still greater misfortune[…]a premature peace. The temptation to make peace will serge [sic] up enormous the moment we gain any military advantage considerable enough to give the enemy a desire for peace. Unless, at that moment we have thoroughly decided what we do want in the way of terms, a grave danger will arise of our being stampeded into a treaty which we shall afterwards regret.’ From papers collected by Capt Eric Richard Hanby Holmes, 1913-1941. Hanby Holmes served with the Artist’s Rifles and 6th Bn The Durham Light Infantry. By the end of the war Hanby Holmes was attached to the Royal Engineers for Army Signal Service. Papers were collected primarily while serving on the Salonika Front during World War One (1914-1918).
