Description

Letter from Lt Col Standish O’Grady to his father the 1st Viscount Guillamore, dated Yvetot, 25 Oct 1815. In this letter O’Grady reveals he has just returned from Brighton via Dieppe, having shared the journey with a Lady Cahir (later Countess Glengall?) and her daughter. O’Grady complains of his poor health, stating that he cannot spend a damp winter in France. He suggests that the Regiment will be returned to Brighton in which case he intends to stay with the 7th. He mentions that the 10th Hussars are due to go to Ireland. There is some society gossip, including the news that Gen (Peregrine) Maitland had eloped with a Lady (appears to be Lady Sarah Lennox who Maitland married at Wellington’s HQ on 9 Oct 1815, despite oppostion from her family). Typed transcript in a separate folder. From a collection of 45 letters associated with Lt Col Standish O’Grady, later 2nd Viscount Guillamore 1813-1830. These letters include those written whilst serving as a Lieutenant with the 7th Light Dragoons in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo, 1815-1830. With manuscript and typescript transcripts. Associated with the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815).
