Description

Aerial photograph, vertical view of an airfield, probably that of 13 Sqn Royal Air Force, 9 Jul 1918. Probably a British front line airfield on the Western Front, as suggested by the tree lined avenues and patchwork of fields. A hamlet converted for airfield use, with Nissen huts and tents, lies to the bottom left of the photograph, behind a row of large metal aircraft hangers at the western end of the field. To the east of the hangars the airfield stretches to the top of the photograph, showing the heavy wear of aircraft wheels. 10 aircraft can be seen in front of the hangars and another is located off to the east. One the southern part of the field is a cluster of smaller buildings. A three ringed target written in pink ink and imposed upon a field adjoining the southern side of the airfield, is labelled with an arrow indicating north and with the letters A, B and C aded to the concentric rings of the target. This suggests that an aerial bombing or firing range used for target practice. Below the rings is a field, at the edge of which are earthworks and grooves and a row of Nissen huts. From an album containing 96 photographs relating to Lt William Charles Carter who served in the Artists’ Rifles The London Regiment from 1913 and 13 Sqn Royal Flying Corps 1917-1918.
