Description
‘Colonne Pompee a Alexandrie’, Alexandria, Egypt, 1907 (c). Postcard, 1907 (c). ‘Pompey’s Pillar’ is a Roman triumphal column erected in honour of the Emperor Diocletian. It became erroneously linked to the Roman General Pompey because of the misreading of an inscription on its plinth. From a collection of three photographs and several collections of postcards collected by RSM Arthur George Harrington, King’s Royal Rifle Corps and London Rifle Brigade, 1899-1914.
