Photograph: RUINS at ASKI BAGHDAD. Shows a collage of aerial photographs which together create an aerial view of the ruins of the ancient city. Caption underneath reads: Aski Baghdad is up-stream of Baghdad and on the left bank of the Tigris. There is very little to be seen from the ground, but from the air one sees a splendid ground plan, just as is shown in this photo. It is the site, of course, of the ancient city. Even in those days they thought out their town-planning well before they commenced to build. A high-level canal can be seen on the right. This gives some slight idea of how mapping can be done from air photos, but there are many difficulties in that art that are not apparent when looking at this! From a photograph album of 334 photographs compiled by Maj W Leith-Ross, Army Staff and 13th Frontier Force Rifles, 1918-1920. Associated with World War One, Mesopotamia (1914-1918).
