Description

Letter from Lt Col Standish O’Grady to his father the 1st Viscount Guillamore, dated Forzes(?) 23 Jan 1816. O’Grady opens this letter by telling his father that Colonel Kerrison (Col Sir Edward Kerrison) has passed on a War Office order that disbands one troop in each cavalry regiment in France. He fears that this may lead to his being forced out of active service an on to half pay, which would almost negate his chances of becoming a major. He states that he wishes to remain with the 7th for as long as possible and that both Kerrison and Verner (Capt William Verner) will help defend his position, but if this fails he will have to accept reduction with good grace. Typed transcript in separate folder. From a collection of 45 letters associated with Lt Col Standish O’Grady, later 2nd Viscount Guillamore 1813-1830. These letters include those written whilst serving as a Lieutenant with the 7th Light Dragoons in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo, 1815-1830. With manuscript and typescript transcripts.
