Description

A Private of the 5th West India Regiment. Coloured etched aquatint by J C Stadler after Charles Hamilton Smith, 1815. From the series ‘Costumes of the Army of the British Empire, according to the last regulations’, published by Colnaghi and Company, Cockspur Street, 1815. The West India Regiments were recruited from 1795 among Creole slaves and newly imported Africans. The British Army's reliance on the slave trade to recruit these forces was a factor in prolonging that trade to 1807.
