Description

Dismounted parade of the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, Colchester Barracks, 1938. The image possibly shows part of their final mounted parade on March 18, 1938, at the Cavalry Barracks in Colchester, where they officially said goodbye to their horses to become a mechanized unit. His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester (Prince Henry) presented a new standard to the regiment. Photograph by Gale and Polden, Aldershot, 1938 A senior officer inspects a parade of men in the smartened up issues of service dress made after the First World War. The men still wear the old full dress sword belts and carry the 1908 pattern sword. Although the regiment was still horsed, by 1938 it had been mechanised and the horses retired. The regiment had been based in Warburg Barracks in Aldershot for three years before moving to Colchester in 1934. From a collection of 1701 photographs taken by Gale and Polden, Aldershot, showing British regiments and corps, including uniform, kit layouts, mascots, tattoos, portraits of monarchs and soldiers and ceremonial photographs, including the 1937 and 1953 Coronations.
