Photograph showing a mixed group of six men and women and one child, relaxing on the beach in front of rocks at Catalan Bay, Gibraltar, 1897 or 1898. The 1st Battalion went to Gibraltar in September 1897 before travelling to Egypt and the Sudan the following year. They are all wearing civilian clothing and have a picnic with them. They are named as (from left to right); Maj William Augustus Lane Fox-Pitt, his wife Lily and their son ‘Billee’ (later Maj Gen William Augustus FItzgerald Lane Fox-Pitt); Col Villiers Hatton; C Carsham (with his trouser legs pulled up); Mrs Emily Hatton; Lt Ernest Frederick Orby Gascoigne. From an album of 99 photographs compiled by or presented to Captain (later Brig-Gen) Ernest Frederick Orby Gascoigne. The album is entitled: ‘Personal album E F O Gascoigne. 1st & 3rd Battalions - 1894-1905’, but covers the period 1892-1905; taken in England and Gibraltar.
