Before enlisting in the 91st Regiment of Foot in 1811 he served in the Stirlingshire Militia.
Leaving the 91st in April 1835, he soon after petitioned for an increase in his pension.
1836 (c) he joined the 8th Bn British Auxiliary Legion and fought in the Carlist Wars, winning the Military Order of Isabel II in September 1886, but was invalided out in January 1837.
