Description

Photograph of the band of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany’s), posed outside some buildings, 1896 (c). The letter R.M.T. on the hand-written caption could possibly refer to the Royal Military Tournament. The bandsmen are pictured wearing glengarry caps with red and white dicing and regimental insignia on the side. Their scarlet doublets have distinctive piped shoulder wings and yellow facings (collars and cuffs). They have double collar badges of the Assaye elephant and the cypher ‘F’ for Frederick Duke of Albany. The double inverness flaps on the doublet hang down below a large leather belt with a regimental buckle. The cuffs, collars and seams of the doublet, as well as the inverness flaps, are piped white. Their kilts are regimental tartan, with a fly plaid cast over their shoulders and fastened with a plaid brooch. The sporran is of white and black horse hair. Various instruments can be seen including drums, clarinets, trumpets and French horns. The drummer in the centre wears a leopard skin apron. From an album of 99 photographs compiled by or presented to Captain (later Brig-Gen) Ernest Frederick Orby Gascoigne. The album is entitled: ‘Personal album E F O Gascoigne. 1st & 3rd Battalions - 1894-1905’, but covers the period 1892-1905; taken in England and Gibraltar.
