Description

Houghton and Gunn's Diary for 1905 used by Lt Henry Morris Pryce-Jones, Coldstream Guards. The year at Katagum began with company training and musketry. On 19 Jan there was an incident at Hadeifa where 4-5000 armed natives lined the walls of their fortified encampment. Their king was interviewed and promised to bring in their rifles within seven days, Pryce-Jones returning there at the end of the month to see that peace had been restored. On 17 Feb he began his journey back home. He recorded the many occasions upon which he found his carriers and soldiers stealing, fighting or drunk - fining and flogging them himself. He sailed from Lagos 3 April and reached Plymouth three weeks later, returning home where the diary ends.
