Description

Lt Henry Curtis Gallup's diary, kept during his captivity in Afion-Kara-Hissar, May-October 1918. TS diary records Gallup’s daily life including exercise, excursions, gift consignments received, and other officers’ escape attempts. The diary ends on 8 October with the news that there are rumours that Turkey would seek an armistice. As a result of a commission of enquiry into the activities of previous camp commandant, life for Gallup and other prisoners at Afion was comparatively civilised. They were allowed into the bazaar and to take walks. He was one of a number of officers examined by a medical board with a view to their exchange, but he was not one of those selected. He was later, on no real evidence, accused of intending to escape. However, a few officers did escape and were soon recaptured. Inside the front cover is a photograph of the house at Afion in which he lived. Associated with World War One, Mesopotamia (1914-1918).
