He joined the Royal Artillery in January 1857 and served in India and Ireland. On 25 Nov 1879 he was discharged from the Royal Horse Atillery with the rank of Sergeant. On 28th Nov 1879 he enlisted in the Prince of Wales’ Own Norfolk Artillery at Great Yarmouth, where he was discharged 27 Nov 1894
