Description

Drill hall of the 20th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers (Artists Rifles), 1909 (c). Photographic print on album page, 1908-1909 From an album of 115 photographs with interior and exterior views of Territorial Force Drill Halls, London, December 1909 - March 1910. The Place, Duke’s Road, Euston, London, is now a home to the London Contemporary Dance School. The former headquarters of the 20th Middlesex (Artists) Volunteer Rifle Corps (later the 28th (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (Artists Rifles) was designed by Col Robert William Edis (1839-1927). The 28th (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (Artists Rifles) was mobilised at the hall in August 1914. The hall became known as the ‘Artists Place’. When 21st Special Air Service (Artists Rifles) moved to the Duke of York’s HQ in the late 1960s the site fell vacant. It was occupied by the Contemporary Ballet Trust in 1969 and has remained a centre for choreography ever since.
