Description

Photograph of a collage showing the Warrant Officers, Staff, Pay Sergeants and Sergeants of the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, 1898. The collage has been made up of lots of individually cut out images of the soldiers wearing their scarlet tunics and pillbox caps, surrounded by an architectural motif with columns highlighting the battalion’s battle honours. At the bottom are illustrations of soldiers wearing the regiment’s uniform from 1660, 1745, 1815, 1854 and 1898. Photographs taken (and collated?) by Mons. Louis of Euston Road, London. The three officers in the centre of the front row wearing dark blue braided undress frock coats and peaked caps are named as Lt and Adjt Godfrey Clement Walker Heneage (6th from the left); Lt Col Eyre MacDonnell Stewart Crabbe (7th from the left) and Lt & QM James May (5th from the right). From an album of 27 photographs entitled: ‘3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards. Sergeants Mess’, 1898-1922. Most are images taken in Chelsea Barracks, Wellington Barracks and the Tower of London, with some taken in South Africa.
