Medal commemorating the centenary of the escape across the River Buffalo after the Battle of Isandlwana, 1979. Silver. Relief design within a raised rim on both sides. Obverse: At the centre a Union flag on a stave, superimposed upon which is a Zulu shield and assegai, a rifle with fixed bayonet superimposed thereon. Reverse: A depiction of two mounted British soldiers, possibly Lt Teignmouth Melvill and Lt Nevill Josiah Aylmer Coghill, riding across a river, the first one aiding another man who is swimming. In the background Zulu warriors advancing down a hill. Associated with Battle of Isandlwana (1879), Zulu War (1879).
