Description
Transcript letter, 12 Jul 1842. Written by Lt Col Thomas Stephens, 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) to his wife Eleanor in Calcutta. Describes the river conditions which are stalling progress down the river to Nankin. Associated with 1st China War (1839-1842). Stephens survived the battle of Shing Kun Foo, but died a few days later, possibly from cholera.
