Photograph: FIERCE ATTACK BY PRUSSIAN GUARD. VIGOROUS WILTS AND WORCESTERS. The shock of the assault was met mainly by the Wiltshire and Worcestershire men, who, in spite of the heavy shelling to which they had been subjected, stood firm and beat back the enemy, who had severe losses. Considering the importance that the enemy attaches to the ground he has lost in the Thiepval sector, the defeat of the Prussian Guard indicates a declining strength in attack. Men of the Worcestershire Regiment marching to the front, waving their helmets and a mallet in the air, Summer 1916. One of 193 British and Allied Official photographs taken on the Western Front during World War One. Mounted on card, some with their original captions. Associated with World War One, Western Front (1914-1918).
